Underground Movement Roundup
Reviewed By Steve Earles

Dublin-based Underground Movement are a label with great integrity. This comes as little surprise, as label main-man Ian Lawless is himself an individual of great integrity.

First up are…

Bulletridden “Songs Written Before Jumping Out Of An Eight Story Window”

… who, frankly, are a fantastic mutation of Entombed, Motorhead, Amebix and Discharge. This no frills punk infused metal, with a killer groove and no song outstaying its welcome. Anyone who loved the buzzsaw death 'n ’roll of Entombed circa Wolverine Blues will seriously love this. Great crushing songs and far heavier than any of the plethora of fake Myspace core this, core that bands, Bullet Ridden deserve the wider audience being in Underground Movement will give them. Highly recommended

Next up is…

Lividity/Warpath: “Live and Split Open”

As evidenced by the title, this is a split shared between US grind legends Lividity and up-and-coming Dublin gore-grinders Warpath. It just goes to show how quickly Warpath’s profile is rising, and they more than hold their own with Lividity. The sound quality is very good and both bands are excellent musicians, with some seriously good songs, that make you want to check out both bands further….

Then we come to...

Hail of Gunfire III: ‘Various Artists’

If any release was to show the underground Movement ethos, it’s this free promo compilation to promote the Underground, which features a variety of bands both established and unsigned. As well as the aforementioned Bulletridden, we have legendary Dublin-death metallers, Morphosis (from the Sentinel Records’ release Rise Of The Bastard Deities). Amebix fixated crusties Instinct Of Survival. Overoth impress with the dark crushing riffs of Upon The Altar, (from the Kingdom of Shadows album). Two Tales Of Woe lay some seriously heavy groove down with The Final Resistance, from the album A Conversation With Death. Two Tales Of Woe can really play, write great catchy metal songs, and would seriously appeal to a wider audience. Coitus make a welcome appearance, sadly with the death of Skinny probably one of their last. Sol Axis impress with March Of Sol, from the Sentinel Records release…”…to mark the ages”, which has all the dark sincerity of early Bathory. Skewered impress with some great riffing and the CD ends in fine style with Butchered from the intriguingly named Visitor Q. These are my personal highlights, but all the bands imbue the true spirit of the underground and are worth checking out.

Last of all, we have...

Atheos: “The Death Of Utopia”

With songs like The Prestige of Immortality and Cities Collapse, Atheos have managed to successfully blend technical virtuosity with good song-writing, and seriously crushing death metal. This bodes extremely well for their debut full length album out later this year. Some dazzling time changes and deeply moving moments mean this is an album that will appeal to fans of Death, Cynic, Goijira, and Suffocation. I sincerely hope Atheos get a chance to tour and bring their music to a wider audience. Make no mistake, this is an impressive debut by anyone’s standards.
